Climate Change Leading To Climate Action

Climate Change Resilience

Climate change is already reshaping life in rural Tanzania.
Unpredictable rainfall, flooding, deforestation, declining soil quality, and food insecurity are placing increasing pressure on communities already living with limited infrastructure and resources.

Community-led solutions are essential to strengthening resilience, improving livelihoods, and creating long-term environmental sustainability.

Green Kamanga

Deforestation remains a major challenge across rural Tanzania. Trees are cut down for charcoal production, cooking fuel, farming land, and construction materials, accelerating soil erosion, biodiversity loss, and environmental degradation.

Through our Green Kamanga initiative, we established local tree and plant nurseries and successfully planted more than 1,200 trees across Kamanga and surrounding villages between 2021 and 2023.

The project focuses on both environmental restoration and long-term economic opportunity through the planting of fast-growing timber and fruit trees such as mango, papaya, and avocado.

Our next phase will see the establishment of:

  • 100 community-based nurseries

  • 100,000 trees planted over a three-year period

  • Environmental clubs in local primary schools

  • Community savings groups supporting sustainable livelihoods

Training delivered through the project includes:

  • Tree propagation and nursery management

  • Reforestation and soil conservation

  • Fuel-efficient cooking methods

  • Sustainable land use practices

  • Water, sanitation, and hygiene education

This approach ensures climate action is not delivered to communities, but built with them through local leadership, shared ownership, and long-term participation.

WATER, SANITATION AND ENVIRONMENTAL HEALTH

Environmental resilience and public health are closely connected.

In many rural communities, limited waste management systems, unsafe water sources, and inadequate sanitation infrastructure contribute to preventable disease and environmental contamination.

Communities surrounding Lake Victoria are increasingly vulnerable to:

  • Waterborne diseases

  • Flooding and erosion

  • Pollution of local water sources

  • Unsafe waste disposal practices

Around 70% of diseases encountered in health facilities in Tanzania are linked to water and sanitation challenges.

Through community education and locally delivered initiatives, awareness is raised around:

  • Improved sanitation and hygiene practices

  • Environmental health and behaviour change

  • Safe water practices

  • Sustainable community infrastructure

Strengthening climate resilience means strengthening the long-term health, dignity, and wellbeing of entire communities.
