Completing The System For Safe Maternal Care

Construction of an operating theatre

The new maternity ward at Kamanga Health Centre significantly expands capacity for pregnancy and childbirth care. However, without on-site surgical capability, the facility cannot provide full emergency obstetric services when complications arise.

The operating theatre is the next critical step in ensuring that mothers receive the care they need, at the moment they need it, without delay.

Complications during childbirth can occur without warning. Conditions such as obstructed labour, severe bleeding, foetal distress, and uterine rupture often require immediate surgical intervention, including caesarean sections.

At present, women experiencing these complications must be referred to distant hospitals. These journeys are often long and unpredictable, with poor road conditions and limited transport options creating delays at the most critical time.

These delays significantly increase the risk of maternal and newborn death, stillbirth, and long-term complications.

While the new maternity ward improves access to care, its ability to deliver safe outcomes in emergency situations remains limited without on-site surgical capacity.

The maternity ward is now complete and we are ready to begin Phase 2: the construction of the operating theatre.

The Operating Theatre

The proposed operating theatre has been designed as a purpose-built facility connected directly to the maternity ward, creating a seamless pathway from admission to emergency intervention.

It will provide a safe and controlled surgical environment, with the necessary supporting spaces and systems to ensure:

  • Infection prevention

  • Efficient patient flow

  • Reliable delivery of emergency obstetric procedures

In addition to maternal care, the theatre will support other urgent surgical needs within the community, thereby strengthening the health centre's overall capability and reducing avoidable referrals.

Ready to Build

This project is fully prepared for implementation.

All architectural drawings, permits, and planning have been completed, and construction can begin immediately once funding is secured.

This level of readiness ensures that investment can move directly into delivery, with a clear and immediate pathway from funding to impact.

Establishing surgical capacity at Kamanga Health Centre will transform what is currently possible within the local health system.

Women experiencing life-threatening childbirth complications will be able to receive urgent care without the delays and risks associated with referral.

At the same time, the quality and safety of maternity services will be strengthened, and community confidence in the health system will continue to grow.

The operating theatre will also expand access to emergency surgical care for the wider population of approximately 35,000 people, creating benefits that extend well beyond maternal health.

Investment Opportunity

The total investment required to deliver the operating theatre is:

USD $130,000

This is a one-off infrastructure investment that enables long-term, system-wide impact across maternal and emergency healthcare.

We are seeking partners to fund and deliver this next phase of healthcare infrastructure at Kamanga Health Centre.

This project offers a clear opportunity to:

  • Support measurable improvements in maternal and newborn outcomes

  • Strengthen a proven, community-led healthcare system

  • Contribute to a fully planned, ready-to-implement project
