Expanding Safe, Reliable Care For Mothers And Newborns
New Maternity Ward
Kamanga Health Centre has become a trusted place for maternal care in the Nyamatongo community, delivering more than 50 babies each month. As demand has grown, the existing maternity facilities have reached their limits, making it increasingly difficult to provide the level of space, privacy, and responsiveness that quality care requires.
This new maternity ward has been developed to meet that demand and to ensure that mothers and newborns receive consistent, well-supported care at every stage of the journey.
As patient numbers continue to grow, space becomes increasingly limited, privacy is harder to maintain, and staff are required to work around constraints rather than within a system designed to support safe, efficient care.
In maternal healthcare, these limitations carry real consequences. When infrastructure does not keep pace with need, the ability to respond effectively during labour and complications is reduced.
Across Tanzania, maternal mortality remains high, despite the fact that many of these outcomes are preventable with timely access to well-equipped, reliable healthcare services.
The New Maternity Ward
The new maternity ward is now nearing completion and has been purpose-built to expand both capacity and quality of care at Kamanga Health Centre.
The facility includes 26 beds across different stages of care, including delivery, prenatal, postnatal, post-caesarean, and premature care. It also provides dedicated sanitation facilities for mothers, supporting both hygiene and dignity during recovery.
This expansion allows care to be delivered in a more structured and appropriate environment, while also freeing up space in the existing hospital buildings so that other patients can be treated more effectively.

Built Through Partnership
The construction of the maternity ward has been made possible through partnerships with Capital Drilling and Vivcourt, whose support has played a key role in bringing the project to this stage.
These partnerships reflect a shared commitment to delivering practical, long-term outcomes that are grounded in local needs. By working together, we can develop infrastructure that is not only built to a high standard but also embedded within the existing healthcare system and ready to deliver lasting impact.
This approach ensures that projects are not delivered in isolation, but as part of a broader effort to strengthen community-led healthcare services over time.
Extending Care Beyond the Facility
The maternity ward is one part of a wider approach to maternal and newborn health.
Through the SMILE project (Sustainable Maternal and Infant Lifesaving Endeavours), care extends beyond the health centre into the community. Mothers receive follow-up support through home visits in the weeks after birth, along with guidance on nutrition, breastfeeding, family planning, and newborn care.
This combination of facility-based care and community outreach creates a more complete and consistent system, supporting mothers before, during, and after delivery and improving outcomes for both women and their babies.
Powering Reliable Care
Consistent access to electricity is essential in any maternity setting, particularly during labour, delivery, and emergency situations.
In this region, power supply can be unreliable, with outages that directly affect lighting, equipment, and the ability to provide continuous care. To address this, we are working to extend solar power to the new maternity ward, ensuring that critical services can operate without interruption.
Rising for Mothers – The Kilimanjaro Maternity Climb
Funds raised through the climb will help secure reliable solar power, supporting safe and uninterrupted care for every mother who comes through the ward.
Together, these final steps will ensure that the ward is not only complete, but fully operational and ready to serve the community for years to come.
